Mariah Metzger, MS, CSCS

Exercise Physiologist for equestrian women and overachievers with Ehlers-Danlos

Hi! I’m Mariah 😊

In 2015, I was in constant pain. I was stiff and fatigued, and no doctor could tell me why.

My chronically ill, post-baby body was a source of confusion and despair. I was worried I’d never feel capable or participate in a sport again, and I had all but given up on feeling like myself.

I tried CrossFit, but the pain got worse. I kept trying to run or do video workouts.  I tried chiropractic and supplements. I went to doctor after doctor. Sometimes things got better, but not for long.

In 2017 I became a personal trainer. I grew obsessed with educating myself on the body and on biomechanics (like, got-a- master’s-degree-level obsessed) And, around that time, I found horseback riding as an adult.  As Covid began, I got diagnosed with an incurable, extremely painful genetic condition.

As I studied, I learned how to safely increase my fitness. I spent 10s of thousands of hours with the complicated clients like me that others were afraid to train . . . those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, POTS, joint replacements, Parkinsons, MS, and autoimmune disease.

I began to have less pain and to feel more capable. I adopted a Mustang named Elton, who is now one of my main motivators for being fit. I met other women who expressed frustration with how their pain and limitations were affecting their riding and their horse. My experience treating pain and mobility issues was a perfect fit; women like me could see instant improvement in their seat. The smiles. Excitement. Relief. Life really has lead me to *the best job ever*

I love my job and my equestrian and zebra (EDS) clients.
